<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact reflection type liquid crystal projector for displaying an excellent image. <P>SOLUTION: A substrate 6 is constituted of a prism holding plate and a mount part formed perpendicularly to the prism holding plate, and a lens barrel 17 holding a projection lens is mounted on the mount part. The base of a composite prism 15 is adhered to the prism holding plate. The image light emitting surface of a 1st PBS prism 8 faces to the 1st incident surface of the composite prism 15, and the base thereof is adhered to the prism holding plate. The image light emitting surface of a 2nd PBS prism 10 faces to the 2nd incident surface of the composite prism 15, and the base thereof is adhered to the prism holding plate. Then, a B image light beam emitted from the 1st PBS prism is made incident on the composite prism 15 and an R image light beam and a G image light beam emitted from the 2nd PBS prism are made incident on the composite prism 15.
