To improve and harden ground surfaces, and especially to increase the load bearing characteristics in road construction, a hydraulic bonding agent is applied to the ground surface for treatment followed by a mechanical compression. Before the application of the hydraulic bonding agent, the ground is prepared by mixing polyelectrolytes with ground material taken from the upper surface layer, and preferably polymers or copolymers based on acryl amide. The polyelectrolytes are added to the ground material in the mixer at a rate of 0.001-1.0 wt.% of the dry ground material.
