PURPOSE: An idling prevention system using a telematics unit and a method thereof are provided to stop idling within a limited time by transmitting an idling restriction signal if a vehicle is located within an idling restriction area. CONSTITUTION: A telematics unit(20) transmits vehicle position and state data to a server using a GPS signal. The telematics transfers idling restricted area information, and an idling restriction signal and restriction time, and GPS signal reception and communication state with a server(100) to a controller(40). A vehicle speed sensor(50) detects vehicle speed. An engine operation detection unit(30) detects the operation of an engine. A temperature sensor(60) senses temperature of the surrounding of the engine. A power supply switch breaker(70) controls on/off of a power supply switch(80). The server determines the idling restriction time, and sets the restriction signal and the restriction time using the restriction area information and state and vehicle kind information.
