PURPOSE: A display device and a method for controlling brightness thereof are provided to add an on/off function by using transistors to a backlight driving part, thereby carrying out brightness control by current limitation via resistors in addition to the on/off function. CONSTITUTION: A display device includes an LCD module(25c) for displaying characters, an LCD driving part(25a) for writing or deleting characters with respect to the LCD module, and a backlight driving part(25b) for controlling the brightness of the LCD module by current limitation via resistors in addition to carrying out on/off function. The backlight driving part includes a brightness control circuit(25e) connected to ports of a microcomputer(13), wherein the number of the connected ports is smaller by 1 than that required for a brightness level. The current limitation is determined by an amount of current controlled according to the size of a resistance value output from the backlight driving part connected to the LCD module.
