Water is fed at 2 to a settler 1 of conventional design after addition of chemicals at 3. Clarified water is decanted by sills 15 while sludge is drawn from the sludge blanket by pipe 18 leading to a sludge concentrating vessel 19. This concentrating vessel has an adjustable riser pipe 21/22, the position of which relative to the sills 15 maintains the level of the sludge blanket at a convenient height and size.
