PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wireless communication system for switching a communication mode so as to be adapted to estimated communication traffic. SOLUTION: When an instruction interpretation section 23 of a communication apparatus 20 interprets an instruction attended with communication of data requiring a prescribed amount or over such as moving picture data in an adhoc mode, a mode switching request section 24 makes a switching request into an infrastructure mode. When a state discrimination section 14 in a communication apparatus 10 discriminates that the communication mode can be switched, a mode switching instruction section 15 gives a switching instruction to other communication apparatuses in a network to make switching of the communication mode into the infrastructure mode. When not all the communication apparatuses in the network make a transition report of the communication mode within a time-out time indicated by a switching timer 17, the mode switching instruction section 15 makes a switching request of the communication mode into the adhoc mode.
