PURPOSE: An LCD is provided to realize the MVA(Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment mode)-LCD by forming a dielectric layer partially to form pixel areas having low valid voltage areas, thereby obtaining the vertical alignment with a wide viewing angle. CONSTITUTION: An LCD includes a pair of substrates(2,4) facing each other and having electrodes at each facing surface, and liquid crystal(6) implanted between the substrates. TFT substrate among the pair of substrates, have pixel electrodes(16) on pixel areas. The pixel electrodes are formed with orientation regulating slits(48). The other substrate has common electrodes(42) formed with linear protrusions(44) for orientation regulation. Each of the pixel areas is divided into a plurality of orientation areas by the slits and protrusions, wherein liquid crystal molecules(8) are slanted in almost same direction. On the pixel electrodes, a dielectric layer(50) is formed in low valid voltage areas(B) partially, wherein a valid voltage applied to the liquid crystal is lower than the other areas(A). The dielectric layer is formed between the pixel electrodes and the common electrodes and applies different two T-V(Transmittance-Voltage) characteristics to the orientation areas.
