DUAL DISPLAY LCD, PARTICULARLY IN RELATION TO DISPLAYING IMAGE IN BOTH FRONT AND BACK SURFACES

PURPOSE: An LCD is provided to display image from both front and back surfaces of a single LC panel in the free conversion between reflection and transmission modes. CONSTITUTION: An LCD includes facing first and second substrates(110,130), first and second transparent electrodes(112,132) respectively formed on facing surfaces of the first and second substrates, and an LC layer(140) interposed between the first and second transparent electrodes. A first polarization plate(114) with a first transmission axis is positioned on the first substrate, and a front light unit(150) is positioned on an outer surface of the first polarization plate. An alternative reflection/transmission part(134) is positioned on the second substrate for reflecting linear polarized light in accordance with the first transmission axis. A second polarization plate(136) is positioned on the alternative reflection/transmission part with a second transmission axis perpendicular to the first one. First and second display areas respectively realize reflection mode driving of the front light unit forming part and transmission mode driving of the second substrate part.
