<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a new alcohol-producing method capable of being applied to a method for producing an optically active alcohol at a low cost is desired, because methods for producing the optically active alcohol, such as a method for extracting the optically active alcohol from a natural product, a method for optically resolving racemic isomers or a synthetic method using an asymmetric catalyst, are generally complicated, thereby resulting to give the product at a high cost. <P>SOLUTION: This gene having a base sequence encoding the amino acid sequence of a protein having at least an ability for reducing 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone to produce 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-phenylethanol.
