PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic material which efficiently absorbs two photons, i.e. has a large two-photon absorption cross section.

SOLUTION: A nonresonant two-photon absorption material contains a compound of formula (1) or (2) (wherein R11-R16and R21-R24are each hydrogen atom or a substituent, some of which may be bound to each other to form a ring; m1and n1are each an integer of 0-4; R17and R25are each a substituent; i1and i2are each an integer of 0-4; X11and X12are identical to or different from each other and are each a (non)substituted aryl group or a (non)substituted heterocyclic group; m2and n2are each an integer of 1-4; R26and R27are each hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an aryl group or a heterocyclic group; and Z21and Z22are each independently a group of atoms required for forming a 5- or 6-membered ring containing nitrogen).
