[Class 2 (iii)] A plastic material is precipitated by means of acid from a solution obtained by treating a keratin containing material with an aqueous liquid containing the sulphides and hydrosulphides of sodium or potassium and a buffer having a pH only slightly above that required to effect solution of the keratin. Aminoacetic acid, disodium hydrogenphosphate, sodium borate and the amino acids produced during solution of the keratin material itself are mentioned as buffers. The plastic material is washed before separation and drying. It may be given water resistant properties by being treated with a hardening agent before, during or after washing; e.g. the hardening agent may be added to the keratin solution or the acid precipitant. Hydrochloric or sulphuric acid may be used for the precipitation. The plastic material may be pressed, dried and ground for use as a moulding powder alone or in admixture with phenol formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde condensation products.
