PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering device for a vehicle capable of satisfactory steering even if some failure occurs in a steer-by-wire system. SOLUTION: In a steering device 1 for vehicle, a clutch 6 is usually released, so that a mechanical connection between a steering member 2 and a steering mechanism 4 is disconnected. If any failure occurs in a steering actuator 12, a variation R in rotational speeds of a first and a second steering shafts 3, 5 is detected on the basis of signals from speed sensors 25, 26. If the variation R exceeds a prescribed value Ra, powder brakes 15, 16 are operated, and the variation R is reduced to the prescribed value Ra to engage the clutch 6, thus achieving a link between the steering member 2 and the steering mechanism 4. After the link is achieved, an appropriate steering auxiliary force is generated from a reaction actuator 14 to function it as an ordinary motor-driven power steering.
