PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the improvement of the recording medium property such as the improvement of a recording resolution of the recording medium and the increase of recording density in addition to the achievement of low cost and high throughput. SOLUTION: In this perpendicular double layer patterned medium, a patterned soft magnetic backing layer 2 is formed on a nonmagnetic base 1, and a substrate 3, an intermediate layer 4 and a magnetic recording layer 5 are successively laminated on a recessed part of the pattern.
