摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an internal combustion engine for restraining degradation of operability of the engine which is caused by deposits on the intake system. SOLUTION: Even when the intake system of the engine 1 is coated with deposits, a maximum lift of an intake valve 9 is increased to a prescribed value on the increase side so as to increase the intake air flow. Consequently, shortage in the intake air flow, which is attendant on the deposit on the exhaust system, is restrained, and a mean air-fuel ratio of all cylinders #1-#4 is restrained from shifting in consequence of the insufficient intake to a rich side from the theoretical air-fuel ratio of an aimed value in a combustion at the theoretical air-fuel ratio of a homogeneous mixture. Further, degradation of operability of the engine 1, which is caused by rotational variation in the engine 1 resulting from the shifting of the means air-fuel ratio, is restricted.
