In a magnetic memory member comprising a rigid substrate bearing a coating comprising magnetic particles embedded in a binder, the inner portion of the binder being bonded to the substrate, a major proportion of the magnetic particles are concentrated in the outer portion of the binder. The magnetic coating may be provided on each of opposed flat surfaces of the substrate, which may be a disc. The magnetic coating may be bonded to the substrate by a non-magnetic and electrically-insulating adhesive. The magnetic members may be made by a process of coating a flat master member with hardenable magnetic composition, bonding the substrate thereto, causing the magnetic particles to gravitate or be vibrated towards the master member, and then separating the magnetic coating from the master member (see Specification 1,251,756). Separation may be aided by a vapour-deposited metallic parting agent, which may remain on the magnetic coating as a protective film, or by adding a lubricant to the binder. In one embodiment, the memory member comprises an aluminium disc coated on both sides with a dispersion of magnetic iron oxide in epoxy resin. |
