PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device which is capable of improving the compression rate of image data stored in a video memory. SOLUTION: The image display device is equipped with a line buffer 2209 storing data by the line, a pattern comparator 2211 comparing a data pattern with a reference pattern, a reference pattern register 2212 storing four kinds of reference patterns, a run length determination pre-treatment section 2201 taking an AND condition of a result obtained by comparing the patterns with each other, a run length determination circuit 2202 determining how many times the identical output of the same pattern is found in succession in the signals which mean the presence of the inputted runs, a reference pattern switching circuit 2217 selecting a reference pattern, a data pattern occurrence frequency counter 2218 counting the frequency of occurrence of the data pattern which is found identical when the reference pattern register 2212 is compared with the pattern comparator 2211, and a data pattern occurrence frequency register 2219 storing data as to the frequency of occurrence of the identical data pattern.
