Exhaust gas installation (10) of a direct injection lean burn IC engine (12) comprises a NOx storage catalyst (24) arranged in an exhaust gas pipe (22) of the engine close to the engine, and a charging air compressor (32) driven by the energy of the exhaust gas affecting the compression of air added to the engine by lowering the energy of the exhaust gas flowing through the catalyst. The exhaust gas running length between the IC engine and the NO storage catalyst is selected depending on the amount of energy removed by the compressor. An Independent claim is also included for a process for treating an IC engine exhaust gas.
