Impure titanium metal is treated to remove contaminants and to render the metal amenable to arc welding by contacting the metal with an acidic solution containing a ferric salt of a mineral acid or a nitrate compound. The acid used may be hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid or an organic acid such as acetic acid or solutions of such salts as magnesium chloride which form acid solutions. The ferric salt may be the chloride, sulphate, nitrate or phosphate or ferric ammonium sulphate and is preferably used in such amount that the solution contains 0.5-6 per cent of iron. The nitrate compound may be nitric acid or sodium or potassium nitrate and is preferably present in such amount that the solution contains 2-10 per cent of NO3. Specification 632,564 is referred to.
|
