PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect an end part position of a medium irrespective of difference of partial conditions on the medium. SOLUTION: This medium end part detection device is provided with a media sensor having a light emitting element and a light receiving element to detect the end part position of a paper sheet based on an output value of the light receiving element when moving a position of a section to be detected of the media sensor for the paper sheet. Here, a value of current for detecting paper end to be carried to the light emitting element is obtained as follows. First, the media sensor is moved to the center of a paper sheet conveyance passage (S110), and the paper sheet is conveyed to a predetermined position (S120 to S150). Next, a value of current (quantity of light adjusted value) to be carried to the light emitting element is obtained to make an output value of the light receiving element a target value concerning a position A on the paper sheet which is a section to be detected of the media sensor (S160, S170). Furthermore, the section to be detected is moved to positions B, C to obtain the quantity of light adjusted value in the same way (S180 to S230). Lastly, the minimum value of the quantity of light adjusted values with respect to the positions A to C is determined to be the value of the current for detecting the paper end (S240).
