PURPOSE: A self RAID(Redundant Array of Inexpensive Discs) system and a data recording and reading method are provided to implement a self RAID system for backing up the data in a single hard disc drive by using a hard disc drive with a backup head. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a spindle motor, heads(230, 270), an actuator arm and a controller(250). The spindle motor rotates a disc. The heads(230, 270) face each face of the disc. The actuator arm drives the heads(230, 270). The controller(250) makes the heads record or read data at or from the discs according to a mode selection signal. The controller(250) analyses the mode selection signal, makes the heads(230, 270) record or read the same data at or from the discs in a case of an RAID mode, and makes the heads record or read different data at or from the discs in a case of a general mode.
