PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for immobilizing cells, capable of highly precisely immobilizing the cells in such a state that the cells sustain their activity, even in a very small area or another area on which a complicated pattern is structured. SOLUTION: This method for immobilizing the cells comprises immobilizing the cells in a desired area on a surface of a substrate, wherein the method includes a step (St2) for forming a mask layer in the area other than the desired area on the surface of the substrate, steps (St4, St5) for contacting the surface of the substrate and a surface of the formed mask layer with a solution containing the cells, and immobilizing the cells thereon, and a step (St6) for controlling a pH of the solution in such a condition that the cells do not lose their activity but the mask layer is separated from the substrate.
