Method and apparatus for shared protection in an optical transport network ring based on the ODU management

The nodes (n1-n5) terminating the optical data unit (ODU) path are allowed to manage the automatic protection switch (APS) signaling protocol and the consequent bridge-and-switch operation for protection. The APS signaling protocol is activated on the assigned ODU protection path in the opposite side of the ring when a failure occurs in ODU working path. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) optical transport network ring; (2) optical transport network node; (3) shared protection program; and (4) computer readable recorded medium storing shared protection program.
