PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the sharpness of an image displayed by processing a video signal in a manner emphasizing a change in luminance produced during a horizontal scanning period. SOLUTION: A microprocessor 47 generates an output signal in response to the selection of the sharpness controlled by users. The above output signal is offered to an edge replacing processor 38, a luminance peaking circuit 42, and amplifier 54. A luminance signal Y is differentiated in a differential circuit 52, amplified by the amplifier 54 and generates a signal VSVM driving a SVM device 56. The luminance signal Y, whose outline is adjusted by the edge replacing processor 38, makes peaking in the luminance peaking circuit 42 and the output YPE is compounded with a color signal in a video driving circuit 34 and generates a RGB driving signal.
