PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means capable of forming fuel air mixture bulk with appropriate concentration and magnitude within a combustion chamber having a cavity of which volume is fixed in accordance with operating condition of an engine. SOLUTION: Dependent upon operating condition of an engine, the engine is characterized by following constitution. In a direct injection spark ignition type internal combustion engine which carries out switching uniform combustion which performs fuel injection during induction stroke and stratified combustion which performs fuel injection during compression stroke, it is formed on surface of a piston crown with the cavity 3a which center is substantially coincided with central axis of spray which is injected from a fuel injection valve. In relatively low load operating range in the operating condition that carries out the stratified combustion, the engine forms the fuel spray which grows up from circumferential wall surface of the cavity to axial direction of cavity center. In relatively high load operating range in the operating condition that carries out the stratified combustion, the engine forms the fuel spray which grows up from central axis of the cavity to direction of the circumferential wall surface of the cavity.
