<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a prior art that, when LEDs are brought into close contact to raise brightness in backlight using an optical waveguide plate, there occurs the uneven brightness of illumination light because there is formed in the optical waveguide plate a dead space where internal light is not existent. <P>SOLUTION: The optical waveguide plate 1 comprising an optically transparent plate-shaped members changes an optical path for light emitted from a light emitting light source 2 disposed on the side of the optical waveguide plate, and emits surface-shaped illumination light 5 to an object 7 to be illuminated from the upper surface 1a of the optical waveguide plate. A trapezoidal extension portion 1F extending with a substantially reverse trapezoidal shape is formed on one side surface 1c of the optical waveguide plate facing the light emitting light source 2.
