A vehicle is supported above surface 3, Fig. 1, by at least one gaseous cushion 4 formed and contained beneath the vehicle at least in part by a curtain of fluid issuing from the bottom of the vehicle, at least part of fluid forming a curtain 8 at the front of the vehicle being recovered into the vehicle to form or assist in forming a fluid curtain 11 at the rear of the vehicle. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the rear curtain is initially formed by air drawn through a valve controlled port, thisair being replaced by the recovered fluid when the vehicle is operating; in Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown) the recovered air forms a curtain rearwardly of a primary curtain and part of this primary curtain is also recovered in Fig. 6. Cross flow blowers are used to create the front curtain and to energize the recovered fluid in Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 7, closed recirculation curtains 50, 55 are formed at the front and rear and the recovered air from the front curtain issues from port 69 to form a second rear curtain. The air for curtain 55 is initially taken in through opening 70 and pipe 59. In Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), the air for the rear primary curtain is taken in at the sides of the vehicle and passes along a transverse duct having a slot, part of this curtain is recovered to form the secondary rear curtain. The cushion may be subdivided and may be partly contained by side walls. |
