The heater-generator system (2) has e.g. a two- stroke diesel engine (6) with a fuel pump (18) drawing fuel from a tank (16). It is connected to a generator (8) to make a motor-generator set (4). The exhaust gases from the engine are passed through a heat exchanger (14) to heat the building. The generator supplies current to an intermediate circuit (10) with connections to a storage battery (12) and a public electricity supply (20).
