PURPOSE: A method for controlling a printing operation of an ink jet printer is provided to control an operation of a print head according to types of printing papers by registering types of the printing papers corresponding to characteristics of the printing papers. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a printing operation of an ink jet printer includes the steps of registering a type of a printing paper(31), determining a type of a printing paper(33), and controlling a head driver(35). At least one type of printing papers used by a user is registered together with characteristic values thereof and stored in a storage part in the registering step. Also, if the user inputs a printing command for a document to be printed, the type of the printing paper is determined depending on the characteristics of the printing paper supplied to a paper feeding tray through a sensor. Also, a head driver is controlled based on control data corresponding to the sort of the printing papers.
