PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily detect the ignition timing of an internal combustion engine to be operated by compression self-ignition. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine operated while switching a compression self-ignition operation for operating the engine by compression self-ignition of air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber and a spark ignition operation for operating the engine by spark ignition of air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, current is carried to a primary coil also during the compression self-ignition operation. According to this, since a voltage is applied between the electrodes of an ignition plug by the induced electromotive force generated in a secondary coil, the ion current generated in the ignition can be detected. In such a method, the ignition can be detected also in the compression self-ignition by the extremely easy method of only driving the ignition coil similarly to the spark ignition. When the start timing of the current-carrying to the coil is changed according to the ignition timing, the ion current can be detected without being influenced by noise. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
