PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which has a movie camera function compatible with both PAL system and NTSC system and a high definition still camera function using a PAL system sensor with many pixels. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises a CCD 12 of PAL system which performs photoelectric conversion of a subject image entered through an optical block 11, a digital signal processing part 15 which converts an output of the CCD 12 into an image signal by various image processing, a recording part 19 which records a digital video signal in various recording media, a video output part which outputs the digital video signal to an external TV monitor, an electronic viewfinder 18 which indicates the output of the CCD 12 and takes a picture in a mode which reads out all the pixels in a long cycle or in a mode which reads out the pixels in an arbitrary pixel region in a short cycle, whose area is obtained by excluding unnecessary charges after performing a high speed transfer of CCD during a blanking period of the image signal.
