Apparatus for determining the presence or absence of a perforation in at least one specified position on a record card comprises edge detecting and perforation sensing fluid openings spaced apart along the direction of travel of the record card, and fluid logic means which produces a fluid output indicative of the presence or absence of a particular combination of blocked and unblocked openings. Fig. 1 shows a device for sorting record cards in accordance with a single perforation code in a given column. The perforation sensing opening 14 is spaced from edge detecting opening 18 in accordance with a preselected perforation position which is to be associated with hopper 65. Inverters 32, 34, 36 produce " high " outputs when the associated openings 14, 16, 18 are unblocked. With all openings 14, 16, 18 unblocked, control streams 44, 46 are both applied to fluid switch 48 and the power stream remains in the last channel 54 or 56 to which it was directed. Arrival of the leading edge of a card 10 at opening 14 removes input 46 and the power jet switches to channel 56. When the leading edge of card 10 blocks opening 18, input 44 is removed, and if a card perforation is aligned with opening 14 at this time, AND gate 38 produces an output to switch the power stream to channel 54 and deflect the card into hopper 65. Although input 46 is removed when the card leading edge blocks opening 16, the power stream remains in channel 54 of switch 48. Passage of the card trailing edge past opening 18 causes the power stream to be switched back to channel 56 so that the distance between successive cards need only be about the same as the diameter of opening 18. The openings 16, 18 may be located to scan the edge of cards 10 or a non-perforated region between columns, or they may be narrow slots extending completely across the cards. The inverters may be eliminated if air is blown through holes in plate 9 towards openings 14, 16, 18. Other forms of fluid logic are described, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). The device of Fig. 2 (not shown) responds to a particular two-hole combination. Openings 14, 18 detect the presence of a perforation in a predetermined numeral position and provide an output from AND gate 38 as in Fig. 1. If a hole is also present at a predetermined zone position aligned with an opening 70, an AND gate 76 produces an output to switch the power stream of switch 48 to channel 54 so as to deflect the card into hopper 65. Another form of fluid logic is illustrated in Fig. 5 (not shown). The device of Figs. 6A, 6B (not shown) is for selecting a particular one or two-hole combination. A plenum chamber 144 may be connected with any one of numeral sensing openings 130-138 by means of a rotatable disc 148 having a single hole 152. A second plenum chamber 146 may be connected to one of zone sensing openings 139-141 by means of a disc 150. The plenum chambers 144, 146 are connected to inverters 32, 74 as in Fig. 2. If a particular single hole code is to be detected, disc 150 is rotated so that communication with openings 139-141 is cut off and chambers 144, 146 are connected through a channel 160. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown), selection of a two-hole combination is effected by means of a punched card affording communication between two plenum chambers and selected zone and numerial sensing openings. A plurality of any such sensing/sorting stations may be arranged in series, and each station may be arranged to sort on different columns or combinations of columns as well as different hole codes. Each station may further be arranged to " sort by exception ", that is each station may be arranged to deflect cards not carrying a particular item of information associated with that station whereby a final card hopper collects selected cards and all preceding hoppers collect rejected cards. Fig. 11 (not shown) illustrates a device by means of which ordinary sorting or sorting by exception may be achieved. A rotatable body 250 has two channels 252, 254 so that either output channel 54 or 56 of fluid switch 48 may provide the card deflecting jet via channel 252.</p>
