To retract and tense a weft yarn (3) which has been cut to length of insertion, at a jet loom with at least two spaced weft yarn guides (5,6), one yarn guide (6) can be shifted. A motor-powered crank (7) is between the yarn guides with a weft carrier pin (8) at its free end. The moving yarn guide is controlled to adjust the lie of the weft, and a controlled release frees the weft when it is in the correct lie and position. The moving yarn guide is shifted on a vertical plane with controlled positioning. The deflection movement is stopped using an angled laying surface (16) for the weft at a circular ring (14), concentric to the rotary axis of the crank. The crank drive is in correlation to the loom speed.
