PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve heat resistance, weather resistance and durability in a polarized light separating element which converts randomly polarized lights to polarized lights of a matched polarization direction, to improve productivity in manufacture of the polarized light separating element and to reduce illuminance irregularities of an emitted light. SOLUTION: The phase difference plate of a polarized light converting element is clamped, adhered and arranged adjacently to a polarized light separating film or adjacently to a reflection film at the joining part of a plurality of light transmissive members. At the time of alternately laminating and adhering a light transmissive plate where the polarized light separating film is formed and the light transmissive plate where the reflection film is formed, a laminated body for which the phase difference plate is clamped between the light transmissive plates, laminated and adhered is formed. The laminated body is cut obliquely to a lamination surface, a polarized light converting element block is cut out and ground and thus the polarized light converting element is manufactured. At the time, by adjusting the thickness of the respective light transmissive plates so as to practically equalize the interval of the polarized light separating film and the reflection film adjacent to each other, the illuminance irregularities of the emitted light are reduced.
