PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recorder in which malfunction of a detecting means for judging the ejecting condition of ink from a recording head can be judged by a simple means. SOLUTION: The inkjet recorder comprises a recording head 1 for recording an image on a recording medium by ejecting ink, a light emitting element 31 emitting an ink passage detecting light D to intersect the traveling passage of ink being ejected from the recording head 1, a detecting means 3 arranged with an element 32 for receiving the detecting light D and delivering a signal of variation depending on whether the optical axis of the detecting light D is intercepted or not, and a means for controlling operation/non-operation of the light emitting element 31. The inkjet recorder further comprises a means for monitoring the output from the detecting means 3 at a specified timing under a state where ink is not ejected from the recording head 1 and judging the operational state of the detecting means 3 based on an output signal therefrom. The judging means judges malfunction of the detecting means 3 based on the operation of the light emitting element 31 and the output from the detecting means 3 corresponding to the state change to non-operation.
