Food smoking chamber comprises an assembly which drives a wood block downwards onto a motor-powered friction wheel. The circular friction wheel has a conical surface with three or more symmetrical and equidistant radial raised friction ridges. The smoke generator (10) has an electric motor (13) powered friction wheel (12) with a shaft feed (16) guiding the end-face of a wood block onto the friction wheel. The shaft (16) centreline and friction wheel (12) axis of rotation (14) are aligned. The shaft is about 2-4% larger than the wood block. The friction wheel has a number of upwardly-directed radial raised ridges on its conical face. The ridges are preferably. metal strips welded into recesses within the conical surface. The descending wood block is forced downwards by a drive wheel and prevented from rotation within the shaft by a guide wheel.
