PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal formatting technique of an image signal particularly a television signal capable of easy image processing by a computer and easy data compression. SOLUTION: In order to obtain a square pixel, the number of effective horizontal pixels is to be set to approximately 853, because effective numbers of scanning lines are 480 in the conventional sequential scanning method with an aspect ratio of 16 : 9. However, when using JPEG and MPEG, one block in the discrete cosine transformation (DCT) is 8 pixels by 8 pixels, and in general, color difference information is determined at the sample point of half luminance. Because of the above, it is convenient to set the number of pixels to a multiple number of 16. Although the multiple number of 16 nearest to 853 is 848, when considering conversion from another image signal, hardware scale for the conversion is increased when using 848. Accordingly, the number of effective horizontal pixels is set to 864, which is a multiple of 16 and close to 853. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
