Chlorine is obtained from nitrosyl chloride which may contain Cl 2 NO 2 , and H 2 O, by oxidizing the nitrosyl chloride with oxygen, air enriched with oxygen, or air, in a first stage at 300‹ to 400‹ C., cooling the oxidized mixture and allowing the reaction to go to completion in a second stage at 100‹ to 200‹ C., and separating chlorine from the resulting mixture of Cl 2 , NO 2 , and remaining NOCl Preferably, less than the stoichiometric amount of O 2 is used, and the starting gas consists mainly of NOCl pre-heated to 150‹ to 220‹ C., and is brought into contact with a catalyst of, e.g., alumina, an aluminium silicate, a sodium aluminium silicate, or silica gel, at that temperature for at least one second, so that the NOCl dissociates into NO and Cl 2 . The oxygen or gas containing it is admixed with the NOCl gas stream at any desired point before or after the catalyst layer, and the reaction of O 2 with NO raises the gas temperature to 300‹ to 400‹ C., and then on cooling to 100‹ to 200‹ C., the reaction between these two gases goes to completion thus preventing the back-reaction of NO with Cl 2 to re-form nitrosyl chloride. The chlorine is separated by distillation after condensing the product gases.</p>
