PURPOSE: A combination system for outputting messages according to exclusive output states and a method for controlling the same are provided to prevent users from misunderstanding the system by providing messages representing the impossibility of change or view of environmental setting according to the output state of current image play signals from a function block. CONSTITUTION: A combination system includes function blocks such as a VCR part(110), a DVDP part(120), a broadcasting signal processing part(160), and a signal selecting/outputting part(170). The broadcasting signal processing part carries out the signal processing for outputting broadcasting signals of a selected channel in a TV receiving mode, and is included in the VCR part. The signal selecting/outputting part selects and outputs A/V signals transmitted from the DVDP part, the VCR part and the broadcasting signal processing part under the control of a VCR control part(110-7). The VCR control part serves as a main control part of the system to command a DVD control part(120-7) to output a message on the output state of an exclusive output terminal for DVD image play signals to a screen. As the command is transmitted, the DVD control part controls the message to be synthesized with image play signals read out from a DVD(120-1) to be output together.
