The invention relates to a method of operating the electric window lifters of a motor vehicle. The aim of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and user-friendly method for controlling the window lifter function for moving the front window and the rear window. To this end, the window lifters on one side of the motor vehicle are driven by operating a single actuator element. The movement of the front window and the rear window is controlled depending on which sense of direction and movement mode of the windows is selected and which position the rear window has. In motor vehicles with movable roof the position of the roof of the motor vehicle is additionally taken into consideration.
