PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating device which thins a coating film without deteriorating the stability of a coating material and the dispersibility of a coating liquid and thereby, manufactures a high recording density magnetic recording medium showing outstanding medium characteristics and surface smoothness, and a cooling method. SOLUTION: This coating device comprises a first supply device 1 which supplies a coating liquid, a second supply device 4 which supplies a solvent for diluting a coating liquid, a dilution mixer 8 with an inflow aperture through which the coating liquids supplied from the first supply device 1 and the second supply device 4 respectively and a solvent are introduced, and an application part 15 which receives the diluted coating liquid discharged from the dilution mixer 8 and supplies the diluted coating liquid to the surface of an object to be coated. The coating method enables the dilution of the coating liquid to the specified coating density level before applying it to the surface of the object, in this application process.
