During every engine operating state, a composition of the total mass (mPCV) of a ventilation gas recycled via a positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is determined in a control device (CD) via exhaust gas values detected, operating values of fuel supplied, combustion air and engine oil temperature and taken into account in the CD in order to adjust air-fuel ratio fed to the engine.
