<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display wherein reflection is hardly generated on the films except a semitransmission reflection film and reduction of contrast based on generation of leaked light is hardly generated. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display 20 has a liquid crystal cell 21 wherein a liquid crystal layer 26 is interposed between a pair of substrates disposed opposite to each other. A cholesteric liquid crystal layer 33 to be a semitransmission reflection layer reflecting a portion of circularly polarized light having a prescribed rotary direction and transmitting a portion thereof and an alignment layer 32 for a cholesteric liquid crystal aligning liquid crystal molecules of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer 33 are provided on the inner surface side of a lower substrate 23. When the refractive indices in a major axis direction and a minor axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules which are constituents of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer 33 are defined as Ne and No, respectively, the refractive index Nh of the alignment layer 32 for the cholesteric liquid crystal satisfies No≤Nh≤Ne. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
