A method for determining the sighting distance of an optoelectronic detector mounted on a vehicle, in which during operation of the sensor (12) the presence of an obstacle or disruption in the sighting distance (14) of the sensor (12), which is at least zone-wise affecting the sighting distance, is ascertained and can be identified by evaluating the reflected radiation. From the reflected radiation which at least detects the interference radiation originating from the interference zone, is ascertained the intensity of the interference (21-27) and from the intensity of interference is determined the instantaneous sighting distance (14') of the sensor (12). An Independent claim is given for a detection device, especially a laser scanner.
