PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating nitrogen compound-containing water by which nitrogen compounds in waste water containing oxidizable nitrogen compounds such as ammonia, cyano compounds and organic nitrogen compounds, e.g. waste water of a chemical factory and waste water discharged in regeneration of an ion exchange equipment for treating condensed water of a power plant can be efficiently made harmless by oxidation decomposition. SOLUTION: The method for treating nitrogen compound-containing water comprises a first step in which carbonic acid is removed from nitrogen compound-containing water containing oxidizable nitrogen compounds and carbonic acid and a second step in which the oxidizable nitrogen compounds are oxidized by bringing treated water of the first step into contact with an oxygen- containing gas in the presence of a catalyst.
