PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member and a piston ring which are excellent in the initial fitness, the seizure resistance, and wear resistance, and capable of prolonging the service life and improving the reliability. SOLUTION: In the sliding member 10 having a base material 11 as a body and a plated part 12 provided on the surface of the base material 11, hard particles 13 are contained sidlingly in a gradually decreasing manner, and solid lubricant particles 14 are contained sidlingly in a gradually increasing manner from the face side 12a of the plated part 12 toward the base material side 12b.
