PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focus adjustment device shortening time until focusing without enlarging a space at a low cost. SOLUTION: A focus lens 11a changing the focus state of an optical image corresponding to drive in an optical axis direction is driven from infinity to a first point-blank position, and a focusing position peripheral range including a focusing position is detected based on image data sampled every time when a first sampling interval is drive. Then, the focus lens 11a is driven within the focusing position peripheral range and the focusing position is detected on the basis of the image data sampled every time of the drive of a second sampling interval finer than the first sampling interval.
