PURPOSE: An antiobesity agent containing panaxadiol-based saponin extracted from red ginseng is provided. The administration of the panaxadiol-based saponin into animal models of obesity shows remarkable body weight reduction, body-fat reduction, locomotor activity increase, NPY expression increase and CCK expression decrease. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for suppression and treatment of obesity contains panaxadiol-based saponin extracted from red ginseng(Ginseng Radix rubra) as an effective ingredient. The composition is characterized in that it is obtained by addition of red ginseng containing panaxadiol-based saponin, or other Chinese herbal preparations. The composition also contains one or more components containing ginsenoside Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Rg3, Rh2 as a major component of panaxadiol-based saponin.
