摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective film by which mechanical strength of the surface of a base material can be enhanced even though the protective film has the same thickness as that of a conventional protective film and the same mechanical strength as that of a conventional surface of the base material can be maintained even if the protective film is made thinner than the conventional one and to provide a magnetic recording medium whose protective film can be made thin while the mechanical strength of the medium is maintained and which can contribute to enhancement of recording density. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a non-magnetic substrate (1), a magnetic recording layer (2) formed on the non-magnetic substrate (1) and the protective film (3) comprising an intermediate layer (31) and a carbon film (32) which are successively formed on the magnetic recording layer (2). The intermediate layer (31) contains at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Cu, Zn, Ge, As, Pd, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ir, Pt, Au, Pb and Bi and has≤3 nm thickness and the carbon film (32) has≤10 nm thickness.
