The lift cage (1) has three cables (14) on each side which pass over sheaves of winding gear at the top of the shaft. The first ends of the cables are fastened to brackets on the side of the cage and their second ends are fastened to counterweights (15). The two vertical guide rails have an H-shaped cross-section, and are situated on either side of the cage near the door (2). The webs of the H-shapes run parallel to the sides of the cage. The counterweights move up and down the outward-facing U-shaped channels with angled guide wheels engaging angle irons. The brackets holding the lift slide up and down the inward-facing channels and are enclosed in sealed (46) housings (42).
