Broad spectrum microbicidal and spermicidal compositions containing an anionic surfactant such as sodium dodecyl sulphate

A microbicidal composition comprising sodium dodecyl sulphate, lithium dodecyl sulphate, lauric acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The composition reduces the titer of non-enveloped viruses such as human immunodeficiency viruses, herpes simplex viruses and papillomaviruses in contact with the composition by at least 99%. The composition can also be used to prevent pregnancy. The microbicidal composition can be coated on or impregnated into a substrate such as a condom, diaphragm, nursing bottle, a container for holding or transporting a biological fluid such as blood, milk serum or lymph, or a filter.
